Lawsuit Claims Basketball Schedule Biased Toward Boys

Franklin County Mother, Former Coach Files Suit

A Franklin County mother and former coach has filed a federal lawsuit claiming that girls get the scheduling scraps when it comes to high school basketball games.

Amber Parker, of Brookville, said it's unfair that boys' teams are scheduled to play during prime weekend nights, while girls' teams must play during the week, putting their school work in jeopardy, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.

Parker's two daughters -- 16 and 10 years old -- each play basketball at Franklin County High School and Brookville Middle School, respectively.

"Their brothers are going to play on Friday and Saturday night. (My) 16-year-old is going run out Tuesday and Thursday, and then run off the court and run home and hope she has enough time to get her homework done, and then on Friday go watch her brother play, who does not share that burden," she said. "I think that's ridiculous. This should have been handled 30 plus years ago when Title IX came down."

The Indiana High School Athletic Association is named in the lawsuit, but Commissioner Blake Ress said the schools schedule in-season games.

"We treat both genders equally, and our tournaments mirror each other. We think we are very fair and all that," he said. "We are not responsible for scheduling season games in any sports."

The Parkers moved to Indiana from Texas, where the schedule was more even, said Parker's 16-year-old daughter, Jade Parker.

"Girls and boys played on the same nights in Texas. I didn't know it should be different. I didn't think it could be different," she said.

The lawsuit also names all of the high schools on the Franklin County High School team's schedule. Amber Parker is the former head girls' basketball coach at the school.
