West Lafayette, IN -- (Sports Network) - Brett Swenson kicked a 21-yard field goal with 1:52 left in regulation to give the Michigan State Spartans a 40-37 win over the Purdue Boilermakers in Big Tem action.

Michigan State (6-5, 4-3 Big Ten) overcame an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to become bowl eligible. Quarterback Kirk Cousins threw for 208 yards and three touchdowns for the Spartans. Swenson kicked four field goals on the afternoon. Prior to the game winner, he connected on kicks of 28, 52 and 52 yards.

Purdue (4-7, 3-4) quarterback Joey Elliott was 39-of-55 for 373 yards and two scores. Keith Smith hauled in 15 balls for 152 yards and a score, while Ralph Bolden rushed for 76 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 20 carries.

The Spartans opened the scoring when Purdue's Ralph Bolden fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and Michigan State's Chris Rucker took the recovery 11 yards into the end zone.

The Boilermakers answered back four minutes later when Elliott found Smith with a 26-yard scoring pass,

Carson Wiggs added field goals of 20 and 42 yards to extend Purdue's lead to 13-7 four minutes into the second quarter.

Michigan State regained the lead with 10 minutes left until halftime, when Cousins found Andrew Hawken with a four-yard scoring pass.

Bolden got the lead back for Purdue on a nine-yard run with just under six minutes left in the first half.

Swenson booted a 28-yard field goal just inside the two-minute mark to cut Purdue's lead to 20-17 at halftime.

Swenson tied the game with a 52-yard field goal just over a minute into the third quarter.

Elliott's three-yard pass to Cortez Smith gave Purdue a 27-20 lead with five minutes left in the third period.

Swenson added a 52-yard field goal to cut Purdue's lead to 27-23 after three quarters.

Bolden extended the Boilermaker lead to 34-23 with a one-yard run three minutes into the fourth quarter.

Seconds later, Cousins connected with B.J. Cunningham on a 73-yard scoring play to make it a 34-30 game. He followed with a nine-yard throw to Blair White that gave Michigan State a 37-34 lead with seven minutes left in the game.

Wiggs booted a 49-yard field goal with 2 1/2 minutes left to tie the game at 37 and set the stage for Swenson's game-winning kick.

Purdue had the edge in total offense, 524-362.
