Indianapolis Tennis Championship officials on Saturday confirmed that the tournament has been sold to an Atlanta marketing firm and would be leaving the city.

The annual tournament, held on the campus of Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis, has struggled in recent years. Attendance was down significantly since the event was moved to June, and organizers had been searching for a new title sponsor, 6News' Sarah Cornell reported.

"This is a sad day for tennis in our community," said tournament director Kevin Martin said. "It is never easy to be the leader of an organization that has an 89-year history and have to sell it, but it is the best decision."

It its glory days, 100,000 people would visit Indianapolis during the weekend of the tournament. Big name players such as Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras took part.

Terms of the sale were not disclosed, but Martin said that the transaction allows for the payment of the tournament's outstanding financial responsibilities.

He encouraged fans to given their support to other Indianapolis organization.

"I hope we get past this disappointment quickly, and I encourage our supporters to turn their attention to the other remaining sport and artistic organizations that make this community great," Martin said.
