A Chevrolet Camaro will once again lead the Indianapolis 500 in 2010 with a nod to its notable predecessors.

The 2010 Camaro SS will feature a modern interpretation of the original rally stripe that debuted on the 1969 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car with an orange metallic paint scheme.

The pace car is equipped with a stock 400 hp 6.2-litre V-8 engine and leather interior.

The first year for Camaro to pace the Indianapolis 500 was in 1967, the year the Camaro made its debut. Camaro has since paced the race in 1969, 1982, 1993 and 2009.

'We've enjoyed a great partnership with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway throughout the years, and are proud to once again have the privilege of pacing the Indianapolis 500 in a Camaro," Chevrolet General Manager Jim Campbell said in a news release.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials announced Tuesday that the 2010 Indianapolis 500 schedule will be cut by a week, moving opening day back to May 15.

Pole Day and Bump Day will be moved to a single weekend -- May 22-23 -- and the race is set for May 30. In all, only one day of track activities will be cut.
