Schools Weigh Colts Holiday

Catholic Schools To Close Day After Super Bowl

Students in Indianapolis Catholic schools will get to sleep in the day after the Super Bowl.

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis announced Friday that school will not be in session on Feb. 8, a decision that scored big with students, 6News' Stacia Matthews reported.

Students at St. Monica Catholic School learned after mass that school would be closed, eliciting a full day of Colts cheer.

The school has celebrated Blue Friday for each of the past three weeks.

"We'll have some celebration on every day of the week," said Principal Tim Weaver. "On Friday, when we set this up, I had faith in the Colts, so we went ahead and made that Colts Day."

Of course, the school's focus is education, but administrators know it will be hard to concentrate on studies the day after the game.

The Super Bowl should end by about 10:30 p.m., but students will be up late to take part in postgame festivities, especially if the Colts win.

"We get to sleep in and don't have to worry about school," said seventh-grader Delano Coffy.

"If we win, everybody would be talking about it," said seventh-grader Annie Magan.

The school's teachers are getting into the spirit with words of inspiration for a big win.

"We can stay up late. Kids can stay up late and watch the game, and we'll have a good time," said teacher Tim Bush. "Go Colts."

The day off was already built into the school year.

Other schools haven't yet decided if they will cancel classes on Monday after the Super Bowl.

When Indianapolis last appeared in the big game in 2007, Indianapolis Public Schools officials were caught off guard when numerous bus drivers called in sick, forcing the school system to cancel classes.
