Bleachers have been increasingly empty in recent years at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships.

Struggling Tennis Center To Be Torn Down

IUPUI To Close Indoor, Outdoor Facilities

A struggling downtown tennis center that once drew top athletes and huge crowds will be torn down.

Officials with Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis announced on Friday that the Indianapolis Tennis Center will close after Aug. 5 to make way for a continued campus redesign.

Last year, the rights to the Indianapolis Tennis Championship were sold and the event was moved from the city, leaving the school to maintain the indoor and outdoor portions of the facility without the help of much incoming revenue.

It its glory days, 100,000 people would visit Indianapolis during the weekend of the tournament, which drew big name players such as Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras.

IUPUI officials said the school would be supportive of a relocation plan for the tennis center, but can neither acquire new land nor commit to new construction expenses.

The school and the city will re-examine the area to determine the best use of the land.
