Manning: Umpire Changes Coming

Colts QB Waits To See Effects

Peyton Manning's frustration with the new NFL umpire rule may be coming to an end.

After reports circulated that the NFL has sent teams a memo, outlining minor changes to the rule, the four-time NFL MVP said at his annual Peyback Foundation bowling event that changes are afoot.

"They're going to make some changes, and we'll see what happens these next couple of weeks. They're still talking about it," he said.

Manning and the Colts were penalized twice for illegal snaps during their preseason game with the Green Bay Packers.

The league's new rule places the umpire behind the running backs instead of on the defensive side of the ball.

The change has slowed the tempos of offenses, such as the Colts', because of the extra time it takes the umpire to place the ball and move to his position.

Manning didn't offer any comment on what changes might be taking place.

Tuesday's event raised $420,000.

The Colts host the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday at 7 p.m. to wrap up the preseason.

The season opener for the reigning AFC champions is Sept. 12 at Houston.
