NCAA Top 25 Game Summary - Indiana At Michigan State

POSTED: :30 EDT October 4, 2003

Jeff Smoker threw for 351 yards with two touchdowns and ran for a score, leading 25th-ranked Michigan State to an easy 31-3 rout of Indiana at Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) have won three straight since a shocking one- point loss to Louisiana Tech. Smoker completed 32-of-40 passes and recorded his seventh career 300-yard game.

Jaren Hayes had 55 yards on 10 carries to lead the Michigan State ground game and added six receptions for 49 yards and a score. The Spartans outgained the Hoosiers 486-285.

Michigan State has won two straight and six of the last seven matchups in the series to keep the Old Brass Spittoon trophy.

Matt LoVecchio finished 14-of-31 for 168 yards for Indiana (1-5, 0-2), which has lost three straight. He was also sacked six times. The Hoosiers have allowed more than 30 points in each of their five losses this year.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran for 90 yards on 24 carries for Indiana, which has lost 11 straight road games since a victory in East Lansing on November 10, 2001.

Michigan State grabbed a 7-0 lead on its first possession of the game, as Smoker directed a eight-play, 60-yard march for a touchdown. He kept the series alive with a 20-yard pass to Agim Shabaj on 3rd-and-7 and finished it with a 12-yard scoring strike to Jason Randall.

After a series of punts, the Spartans scored again early in the second quarter. Smoker threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Hayes, who caught the ball along the left sideline and outraced the secondary before diving into the pylon for the score.

Indiana responded with a 14-play, 73-yard march, but the drive stalled inside the five-yard line and Bryan Robertson kicked a 21-yard field goal to make it a 14-3 game with 7:52 left in the half.

Michigan State took the 11-point lead to the break and added to it on the first possession of the second half when Dave Rayner kicked a 49-yard field goal. The Spartans moved from their own six to the Indiana 25 before Smoker recovered his own fumble for a seven-yard loss on third down to set up the field goal.

The Hoosiers drove inside the Spartan 30 on their initial second-half series, but Chris Taylor fumbled and Clifford Dukes recovered for Michigan State at the 20.

The Spartans then went 80 yards the other way for a touchdown. Smoker kept the drive alive with an eight-yard pass to Aaron Alexander on 3rd-and-6, then threw a 20-yard strike to Kyle Brown. Jason Teague capped the 11-play march with an 11-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 24-3 with 4:04 to play in the third.

Indiana again drove deep inside Michigan State territory, but the Spartan defense stiffened and sacked LoVechhio on fourth down.

Following a trade of punts to start the fourth quarter, Michigan State marched 71 yards in eight plays for the game-sealing touchdown. Hayes keyed the drive with a 28-yard run and Smoker finished it with a two-yard touchdown run on a quarterback option to give the Spartans a comfortable 31-3 lead with 8:49 left in the contest.

The Michigan State defense again thwarted an Indiana drive in the end zone when a fourth-down pass by LoVecchio was knocked out of a receiver's hands with 3:00 remaining.

Game Notes:

Smoker, who hit nine different receivers, tied the school mark for completions set by John Leister in a loss to Michigan in 1982...Matt Trannon caught six passes for 82 yards for Michigan State...Glenn Johnson led Indiana with six catches for 70 yards.
