Butler Coach Meets President Obama

Stevens Helps Welcome Air Force One

POSTED: 5:15 pm EDT May 6, 2011

Butler basketball coach Brad Stevens had hoped to meet President Obama at the White House, after winning a national championship. Butler was unable to make that happen, but Coach Stevens got a proper consolation on Friday.

Stevens joined Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, and others in welcoming the President and Air Force One to Indianapolis International Airport on Friday morning.

The President shook hands with everyone in line, before making a short run across the tarmac to meet with some supporters that had attended the arrival.

Coach Stevens said he talked to the President briefly about basketball. The President's brother-in-law is Craig Robinson, head coach at Oregon State University. Stevens said he and Robinson have crossed paths on the recruiting trail.

The President also commented about wanting to 'shoot some hoops' while in Indianapolis, but his schedule would not allow. Stevens called it an 'unbelievable moment'.

He says he received the invitation through the Butler athletic department. A representative from the White House contacted BU about having Stevens in attendance on Friday.
