Megan Jane McManama: Memories Of A 500 Festival Queen
Each year, the 500 Festival chooses 33 "princesses" to represent the festival and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and to support their activities. Of the 33, one is selected queen. Below, Megan Jane McManama, the 2003 500 Festival queen, recalls her coronation and her involvement with the race:"One year ago my heart was filled with joy, excitement, and anticipation
for the month of May to begin. As the 2003 Indy 500 Festival Queen,
representing the state of Indiana this past year has been a wonderful
experience and an everlasting memory.
Being selected as one of the 33 Princesses opened my eyes to the time
and talent my director, Rod Porter and the 500 Festival staff dedicated
to what our state is most identified with, the Indianapolis 500.Without question, hearing my name -- which, I might add, was pronounced
perfectly by Dave Calabro -- as Queen was the magic moment for me! We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day and a new float to show off our gorgeous checkered gowns. To stand on the platform with my court while our names were announced was special for all of us. Although the
weather tended to be a little chilly and overcast on race day, being in
the winner's circle and giving Gil de Ferran that sip of milk and the
Queen's kiss was great! In closing, I would like to thank the Hulman-George family for making
the state of Indiana the greatest place to be in the month of May, and
giving me the best seat in the house!"
