Thoughts On The Indianapolis 500: Al Unser
Al Unser, one of only three people to have won the Indianapolis 500 four times, says drivers need to have a certain frame of mind to succeed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
"It is a place that will shine on you, and it's a place that will frown on you, and you have to be really in the mood ... that day to survive," Unser told RTV6 in May 2004.
Unser, who won the 500 in 1970, 1971, 1978 and 1987, says he still gets chills when he goes to the speedway on race day."When you walk out there race-day morning and you see 400,000 -- whatever number you want to call it -- people there, it just gives you a feeling that's unbelievable," Unser said. "It's the adrenaline off of them and yourself, and I still get that same adrenaline."That day I walk out there, I get goose bumps and everything, even though I'm not driving. It's just a terrific place."
Read what others have to say.
