My Most Memorable Indy 500: Wil Hampton
Wil Hampton covers sports for RTV6."I have several memories of the Indy 500, but the most memorable was in 1996.
Growing up as an Indiana kid, I have always loved the Indy 500 and all of its traditions. But my career path took me to North Carolina, and far from the famed oval, until
I came home in 1995.The 1996 race was my first to cover as an official member of the media and I can remember standing on the track during the prerace festivities.I was standing on the front stretch between the first and second starting rows when "Back Home Again In Indiana" boomed from the speakers.Wow! Talk about a flood of emotion for me, I was back home again and I was up close and personal with the greatest spectacle in racing. It's great to be in Indiana in May, and every year that song gets to me. I guess I'm just a sentimental Hoosier at heart."
