Manning Gives Houston Problems In Rout

POSTED: 8:39 pm EST November 14, 2004

Peyton Manning continued his MVP-type season by throwing for 320 yards and five touchdowns, as the Indianapolis Colts rolled to a 49-14 rout of the Houston Texans at the RCA Dome.

Manning, last year's co-MVP, finished 18-of-27 passing with a pair of interceptions. He has thrown five TD passes three times this season, twice in the last three weeks, and in nine games already has 31 touchdowns -- two more than all of last year -- with just six picks.

Brandon Stokley caught five passes for 132 yards and two scores, while Dallas Clark added three catches for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Edgerrin James also had a strong game with 86 rushing yards and two catches for an additional 14 yards.

"Offensively we came out and got points on the opening drive and from there we kept the momentum going," Manning said. "It's not something we're conscious about, trying to throw five touchdowns, we're just executing the offense. We are doing an excellent job of putting it in the end zone."

The Colts (6-3), who also had a pair of defensive touchdowns, have won two in a row to remain tied with Jacksonville atop the AFC South. Houston (4-5) has yet to beat Indianapolis in five all-time meetings and lost a division game for the first time in three tries this season.

Domanick Davis ran for 98 yards with two touchdowns and caught seven passes for 54 yards for the Texans, who have lost two in a row in blowout fashion after winning four of five. Houston also suffered a 31-13 loss at Denver last week.

"The last two weeks, we didn't play good defense or offense," said Texans linebacker Jamie Sharper.

David Carr completed 22-of-41 passes for 214 yards with three interceptions in defeat. He also fumbled three times and lost one.

"Probably the most embarrassing loss since I've been here," said Carr. "We just didn't come out and do anything."

The Texans went three-and-out to start the game and the Colts followed with an 11-play drive for a touchdown.

Manning converted a pair of third downs with passes of 21 yards to Clark and 17 yards to Marcus Pollard, then finished the 65-yard march with a four-yard touchdown toss to Stokley on another third down.

Indianapolis scored again early in the second quarter to open a 14-0 edge. A 17-yard completion to Stokley on 3rd-and-9 kept the drive alive early and a 21-yard strike to Stokley helped set up a five-yard TD toss to Reggie Wayne, who tipped the ball and made a diving catch for the score.

Kris Brown then missed a 55-yard field goal attempt on Houston's ensuing series.

The Texans then had to punt after their next possession and the short kick took a strange bounce. The ball hit the turf inside the 25, but bounced back upfield about 15 yards into the hands of Aaron Moorehead, who was coming back to block. Moorehead then raced 34 yards the other way to the Houston 29.

After a 28-yard run by James, Manning found Clark in the end zone for a one- yard touchdown pass to make it 21-0 with just over four minutes left in the half.

Carr was picked off by linebacker Jim Nelson at the Houston 43 and the Colts moved into scoring range, but Mike Vanderjagt's 39-yard field goal try missed wide left. It was his first miss at home since November 17, 2002 against Dallas.

The Colts took the opening kickoff of the second half and needed just two plays to again reach the end zone, as Manning threw a short pass across the middle that Stokley took up the left sideline for a 69-yard score and a 28-0 cushion.

The Indianapolis defense got into the act on Houston's next series, as rookie defensive back Bob Sanders scooped up a Carr fumble and raced 37 yards into the end zone.

"We knew coming in that we were going to have to execute to be able to come into their stadium and compete with them, and we didn't," said Texans head coach Dom Capers. "You can't do the things we did today and have a chance to compete against this football team."

The Texans then finally mounted a drive deep into Indianapolis territory, but Carr was intercepted in the end zone by linebacker Gary Brackett.

Manning was picked off by Aaron Glenn moments later, giving Houston the ball at the Indianapolis 16, and the Texans cashed in when Davis scored from a yard out on fourth down.

The Colts responded immediately with their longest play from scrimmage of the season, as Manning hit Clark with an 80-yard touchdown pass less than a minute later to make it 42-7.

"We had some guys make some big plays," said Colts head coach Tony Dungy. "Peyton made some outstanding throws. Our offense is hitting on a lot of different cylinders right now and it is fun to watch."

Manning was intercepted again early in the fourth, as Antwan Peek's pick set up the Houston offense at the Indianapolis 32. Davis then scored again from a yard away with 7:47 left in the contest.

Indianapolis tacked on one more score with 1:35 to play when Von Hutchins returned an interception 77 yards for a touchdown.

"This was a pretty complete win and that is something we are very happy about," said Dungy. "We talked all week about getting our total game going. I'm really proud of our guys, the way they played."
