SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Doug Brien's 28-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining in overtime gave the New York Jets a thrilling 20-17 victory over San Diego in a rainy first-round playoff game Saturday night.

Brien's kick ended a 60-yard drive and followed a 40-yard miss by rookie Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding at the other end.
Kaeding's miss was shocking for the Qualcomm Stadium crowd, which had seen its team force a tie in the final seconds of regulation. New York had the game all but won after a defensive stand inside the two-yard line with just seconds remaining in regulation, but linebacker Eric Barton was whistled for a roughing-the-passer penalty when he drove Drew Brees to the ground with a right forearm on fourth down. The San Diego crowd, which had grown silent after Brees' desperate pass into the end zone was knocked down, erupted when the call was made. And they got louder when Brees found Antonio Gates in the end zone for a one- yard touchdown pass on the next play, tying the game at 17-17 with just 11 seconds on the clock. Gates sparked the 80-yard scoring drive with a 44-yard catch earlier on, turning a 10-yard play into a big gain when he broke several tackles to make it downfield. Both teams went three-and-out on their first overtime possession. Kaeding's miss came after Brees orchestrated a 48-yard drive on San Diego's second possession in overtime. Brees completed four passes for 31 yards before giving way to his rookie kicker But Kaeding's kick was right all the way.
