Colts Stadium Tax Increase Gains Momentum

The Colts stadium funding project has passed yet another hurdle. Boone County leaders approved a food and beverage tax increase by a 4-3 vote Tuesday morning.

Boone County leaders narrowly approved the food and beverage tax Tuesday.

After less than an hour of questions and discussion, Boone County became the third county surrounding Indianapolis to pass the package.

Thanks to a vote last night, Marion County will provide the bulk of the funding for the $1 billion project. The plan won approval by the Indianapolis City-County Council Monday night by a 23-5 vote.

The vote doubles the food and beverage tax in Marion County to 2 percent. It also increases the hotel/motel tax, auto rental tax and the admissions tax.

With three counties down and four to go, supporters of the stadium project believe it's still on track for a summer groundbreaking.

Passing the food and beverage tax is moving a little more slowly in two other counties.

Monday night, the Johnson County council voted 6-1 in favor of the 1 percent tax for their area. But because the vote was not unanimous, the tax will have to be voted on again at another meeting. That is set for June 22.

In Morgan County Monday night, the council delayed its vote on the new tax. Members narrowly approved it last week, but needed to pass it on a second reading. Members decided they needed more answers on how much money the county will get. They've scheduled another hearing for June 27.

Last week, Hancock County became the first county to approve the tax hike.

The Colts still need to sign a new lease agreement with Indianapolis by the end of this month to keep the plan on schedule.
