BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's football team is going retro for homecoming.
IU unveiled a new alternate, retro uniform for its football team Wednesday.
The "Candy Stripe" uniforms have a crimson jersey and white lettering. The sleeves have the now-famous white stripes, similar to ones along the basketball team's warmup pants.
The word "Indiana" is also written on the inside of the gloves, visible when a player would prepare to catch a football.
According to a release from IU, many of the inspirations for the design came from the Indiana state flag.
Each number on the jersey has a unique piece of the flag. The 19 stars on the flag are also represented, standing for Indiana as the 19th state to join the U.S.

The candy stripe designs were first introduced at IU not in basketball, but in swimming and diving. Doc Counsilman and Hobie Billingsley first used them in the 1960s and 70s to help them spot their athletes in the pool. It was later adopted for the 1971-72 men's basketball team.
The IU football team will wear the uniforms on Oct. 15 against Nebraska.
