INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts agreed to a $140 million extension with quarterback Andrew Luck this week, giving him the largest contract in NFL history.

Team owner Jim Irsay announced the deal Wednesday.

The new contract is a massive pay jump from Luck's four-year, $22 million rookie deal with the Colts (he also received a $14.5 million signing bonus).

In addition to leading the Colts to three consecutive playoff appearances and two division titles in his first three seasons, Luck can now also boast the biggest salary in NFL history.

Luck's six-year, $140 million contract tops the previous record holder -- $132 million for Detroit Lions quarterback Calvin Johnson – and dwarfs the $60 million, four-year extension signed earlier this year with four-time Super Bowl champion New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

The major payday for Luck comes after a rough season for the Colts. The team went 8-8 and relied on backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck for most of the year as Luck suffered a series of injuries. The Colts missed the playoffs in 2015 for the first time since signing Luck as a rookie.
