INDIANAPOLIS -- Cornerback Antonio Cromartie is the first Colts player to kneel during a national anthem during an NFL game this season.

Cromartie took a knee during the anthem before Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers.

Before him, no Colts players had decided to kneel during the anthem, a popular protest in sports in response to police shootings across the United States and racial inequality.

Indiana Fever players decided to kneel before Wednesday night's playoff game.

The protest was started by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

“We live in a great country and part of living in this country is we get to choose,” head coach Chuck Pagano said last week, via ESPN. “I’m grateful for all the men and women who have fought and gave their lives and continue to give their lives for that freedom."

Cromartie is in his 11th year in the NFL. He was signed by the Colts on Aug. 22.
