INDIANAPOLIS -- The NFL suspended Colts defensive end Art Jones for the first four games of the season Friday for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances.

The announcement is a blow to the Colts, who hoped to have a healthy Jones back on the defensive line after an ankle injury kept him on the injured reserve list all last season.

The Colts signed Jones to five-year, $30 million contract in 2014. He played nine games in 2014, making one-and-a-half sacks and forcing a fumble on 34 tackles.

Prior to coming to the Colts, Jones was drafted as a rookie by the Baltimore Ravens in 2010. Jones was part of the 2012 Ravens team that won the Super Bowl over the San Francisco 49ers.

According to the NFL, Jones will be eligible to return to the Colts' active roster on Oct. 3 – the day after a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The league did not release what substance Jones tested positive for.
