INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts traded tight end Dwayne Allen to the New England Patriots in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick.

Allen reacted to the trade report with a note on his Twitter page thanking Colts owner Jim Irsay for "taking a chance on a kid from Fayetteville, NC."

"I'm both humbled and excited for the challenge ahead of earning the right to be called a New England Patriot," said Allen.

Schefter reports that the Colts have traded Allen and their sixth-round draft pick in exchange for the defending Super Bowl champions' fourth-round draft pick.

The Colts re-signed Allen to a four-year $29.4 million deal in 2016. He was named the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2015

The former Clemson Tiger was drafted in the third round in 2012 by the Indianapolis Colts and has played in 57 games over the past five seasons.

This past season he caught 35 passes for 406 yards and six touchdowns.

Allen's best season was his rookie year in 2012 when he caught 45 passes for 521 yards and three touchdowns.

Allen has been an active member of the community while in Indianapolis, offering his time to volunteer and mentor children. He was named the Executive of the Dream Alive Foundation in 2013. The foundation aims to mentor inner city children starting at the age of 12 and introduces them to new places and experiences they might not get otherwise.

The Colts re-signed tight end Jack Doyle to a contract extension on Tuesday.
