Players to watch as Friday Football Frenzy begins

INDIANAPOLIS - RTV6 and HTSN are proud to start our fourth season of Friday Football Frenzy this week, featuring live games from the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference (MIC).

Here are some of the top players we have our eyes on as the season kicks off.

Carmel's Isaac James split duties at quarterback for the Greyhounds last season. He's the man this year for the top ranked team in Class 6A.

James is a threat to make big plays both on the ground and through the air. With a talented group of teammates returning, the Greyhounds will be hard to handle.

Decatur Central quarterback Tommy Stevens is another local player getting a lot of attention. He'll soon be headed to Indiana University, but this fall, the Hawks are expecting big things from their field leader.

"I want to throw the ball a lot more," Stevens said. "Some people didn't think I could throw the ball very well, running the ball so much in this offense. I definitely worked on my throwing abilities."

Park Tudor's Brandon Tiassum is among a long list of highly touted offensive linemen in central Indiana. He has committed to play college football at Notre Dame.

"I want to lead as a group. I don't want to make it seem like I'm a bigger player than anyone else," Tiassum said. "I just want to have a team focus.

Other linemen expected to have big seasons this year include Adam Solomon from Bishop Chatard, who is committed to Illinois, Brandon Knight at Noblesville, an IU commit, Cathedral's Jared Thomas, who is headed to Northwestern and Matt McCann at Bishop Chatard, a Purdue commit.

Lawrence Central's Darren Kirkland Jr. is expected to be one of many defensive standouts this season. He is bound for Michigan and is among the top 10 senior linebackers in the U.S.

"We want to play the best competition, and that's playing in the MIC," Kirkland said. "There's no off days, and that's how we've trained in the offseason."

Other defensive players to watch include Eric Whitehead, also from Lawrence Central, who is headed to Virginia Tech. Asmar Bilal, of Ben Davis, has not yet made a college choice, but teammate Norman Oglesby is set to go to Cincinnati. Westfield's Jacob Robinson and Avon's Joe Belden are each headed to IU.
