6 World War II aircraft to do Indianapolis 500 pre-race flyover

Sequester made flyover questionable

INDIANAPOLIS - Six military airplanes that played a role in World War II will do the traditional flyover at this year's Indianapolis 500, race officials announced Friday.

The flyover had been in jeopardy after the U.S. military announced this spring it would not provide jets due to budget cuts from the federal sequester.

A North American B-25 Mitchell twin-engine medium bomber and five North American T-6 Texan trainer aircraft will fly over the Speedway following the performance of the National Anthem.

Private groups -- the Cincinnati Warbirds EAA Squadron 18 and the Tri-State Warbird Museum -- are supplying those aircraft.
