INDIANAPOLIS -- A gorgeous, sunny day at IMS led to a lot of cases of heat exhaustion and dehydration.
Speedway Police say, at one point around 12:45 pm on Sunday, the infield hospital at IMS was full.
They say there was a "huge surge" of people experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion and dehydration.
Some were taken to area hospitals. Others were given water and an ice pack and felt good enough to leave the infield hospital on their own.
Because of the high number of patients, police say a "casualty collection center" was set up near the museum to help load people into ambulances to take them to the hospital.
Ambulances were also requested from different counties and fire departments. Some helped cover fire houses in Indianapolis while others responded directly to the Speedway.
Police say there was never an issue with not having enough resources to handle all the patients.
Extra cooling buses were also sent to IMS in addition to the IndyGo and Enterprise buses that were already at the track.
The infield hospital had beds available again around 2 pm Sunday.
