Tony Kanaan earns $2.3 million for Indianapolis 500 win

INDIANAPOLIS - How much is winning the Indianapolis 500 worth? This year, Tony Kanaan earned $2.353,355.

The overall purse for the race was a little more than $12 million.

The blistering 187.433 mph speed topped the previous race record of 185.981 that was set by Arie Luyendyk in 1990.

In his first IndyCar race, rookie Carlos Munoz earned $964,205, including a $25,000 bonus for being the rookie of the year.

Third-place finisher Ryan Hunter-Reay earned $583,005, while Marco Andretti took home nearly $470,000 for his fourth-place finish.

Fifth-place was good enough for a $338,000 prize for Justin Wilson.
