Dario Franchitti injured in IndyCar race in Houston

HOUSTON - A wreck during the last lap of the IndyCar race in Houston sent three-time Indianapolis 500 champion Dario Franchitti to the hospital Sunday afternoon.

There were reports that some fans may have been injured in the incident after debris from the fence went into the grandstand. Officials said 13 people were injured, but only two people required treatment.

Franchitti had only a couple turns to the finish when he was clipped by Takuma Sato.

His car went high into the catch fence and flipped and turned before it landed upright. EJ Viso also ran into Sato's car.

Franchitti was awake and alert a few minutes after the crash.

He was admitted to Memorial Herman Texas Medical Center for a concussion and spinal fracture that will not require surgery, IndyCar officials said.

Franchitti also suffered a fracture to the right ankle and he will be kept overnight, officials said.

Sato and Viso were evaluated at the scene and released.
