INDIANAPOLIS -- In 1922, the Ku Klux Klan took hold in Indiana.
D.C. Stephenson moved to Indianapolis and became Grand Dragon.
Making headlines of his own, future famed World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle honed his journalistic skills at Indiana University, his byline was in the Indiana Daily Student.
Like many Hoosiers, Pyle was also a big fan of the Indianapolis 500 and once wrote, "I would rather win that 500 mile race than anything in this world."
The driver making big news at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May 1922, was a young man who cut his teeth as a riding mechanic. But now it was his turn to shine in the driver's seat.
Fans poured into the track on Tuesday, May 30. They parked their cars in the infield, almost right up to the edge of the raceway and paid 25 cents for a program.
Jimmy Murphy and his riding mechanic had the best seats in the house, starting the 10th International 500 Mile sweepstakes from the pole.
Murphy led 153 of the 200 laps and became the best driver in history to win from the pole.
His winning Duesenberg now sits among some of the most famous vehicles in racing history in the Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.
