INDIANAPOLIS -- Sports were the hot ticket in Indianapolis in 1948.
In the spring, the Indianapolis Indians were already well on their way to a 100-win season under their new parent team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. It remains the team's only 100-win season in its history.
In May, many of those same fans had something else to cheer about: the 32nd Indianapolis 500.
A unique six-wheeled car, built by Pat Clancy and driven by Billy Devore, was part of the 33-car field. But it couldn't out-duel the Blue Crown Spark Plug Team of Mauri Rose and Bill Holland, who finished first and second for the second year in a row.
Rose's wins in 1947 and 1948 made him only the second driver at the time to win consecutive Indy 500s. His co-win in 1941 made him the race's third three-time winner.
