1961 saw Indiana legend Oscar Robertson in the midst of one of the greatest seasons in NBA history.
The Cincinnati Royals rookie, who made a name for himself at Crispus Attucks high school in Indy, was taking the league by storm, averaging 30 points, 10 rebounds , and 9.7 assists per game. In February of 1961 he was featured on the cover of Time Magazine.
There was celebration in May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as the track took a trip down memory lane in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the first Indy 500 in 1911.
For only the seventh time in the history of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, the 500 took place on a Tuesday.
Eddie Sachs started from the pole and battled throughout the race with a man who in his previous three starts had finished no better than 10th in Indy.
But on this day, AJ Foyt was as determined as ever.
A refueling malfunction on Foyt's final scheduled pit stop, left him without enough fuel to finish the race.
He came back for a "splash-n-go" on lap 184 , handing the lead over to Sachs.
But a badly worn tire sent Sachs to the pits with three laps to go, opening the door for AJ Foyt to win the first of his four checkered flags in Indianapolis.
