1967 got off to a tragic start.

Hoosier astronaut Gus Grissom and two others died January 17 when their Apollo One space capsule caught fire during a ground test at the Kennedy Space Center.

As that sad moment in history was recorded, a place where all types of history could be shared with Hoosiers opened its doors.

The Indiana State Museum finally had its own home, opening in the former Indianapolis City Hall at Alabama and Ohio.

And it was another year for the record books at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It took two days to get in the 51st running of the Indianapolis 500.

Rain brought competition to a halt after just 18 laps.

The next day, drivers finally got to test their endurance, starting at 10 a.m. on a Wednesday.

Parnelli Jones was the driver to beat, lapping the field behind the wheel of an Andy Granatelli turbine.

But there was heartbreak. He led a total of 171 laps before his car broke with just over three laps to go.

That opened the door for AJ Foyt, who took the lead. But then trouble in the final tour when there was a four car crash.

Tom Carnegie picked up the action.

Foyt emerged from the smoke to win his third Indianapolis 500, only the fourth driver to do so at the time.
