INDIANAPOLIS -- The skyline of Indianapolis took on a new look in 1983 with construction on the Hoosier Dome.

The $77.5 million stadium was a gamble with the hope of luring professional football to the Circle City.

Meanwhile, drivers at the 67th Indianapolis 500 needed no additional luring for their shot at Victory Lane.

Rookie Teo Fabi made headlines during  qualifications, capturing the pole and breaking both the 1- and 4-lap track records.

On race day, Fabi led the first 23 laps, but soon after it became clear that first place was set to be a battle between Al Unser and Tom Sneva, who traded the lead back and forth more than half the race.

Sneva, in his 10th start, had three second place finishes under his belt and was hungry for a win.

He had to out-maneuver not just one Unser, but two. Little Al wasn't in a position to win late in the race after dropping several laps off the pace, but he did run some interference on Sneva, accused of intentionally blocking him to protect his father's lead until Sneva passed them both for good with 10 laps to go.

It would be Sneva's one and only checkered flag with an average speed of 162.117 miles per hour.

Sneva's likeness on the BorgWarner Trophy is the only one shown wearing glasses.
