INDIANAPOLIS -- Downtown Indianapolis prepared for a year of change in 1999.

Market Square Arena held the final events in its 25 year history, including a Celine Dion concert.

Work continued on MSA's replacement, Conseco Fieldhouse, which was set to open before the end of the year.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was also undergoing big changes.

Construction continued on the new pagoda, a brand new road course and other projects in advance of hosting the U.S. Grand Prix Formula One Race in 2000.

On race day, fans were anticipating seeing two-time champ Arie Luyendyk run in his final 500. At least that's what he said.

The Flying Dutchman started on the pole and led the first 32 laps, but a crash brought his day to an early end.

Luyendyk later changed his mind and ran in the 500 two more times before officially retiring.

Meanwhile, the last quarter of the race turned into a duel between Robby Gordon and Kenny Brack.

Gordon was in the lead, but fuel was a big concern. He didn't have enough to make it to the end of the race.

With the white flag in sight, Gordon pulled into the pits.

Brack seized the opportunity and flew right on by with a little more than one lap to go.

He took the checkered flag and gave team owner A.J. Foyt his fifth overall Indy 500 win - four as a driver and his first as a team owner.
