INDIANAPOLIS -- The year was 2002.
Just like the rest of the nation, security was tighter around Indianapolis after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Security was also stepped up as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway prepared for the 86th running of the 500.
But along with added security, fans and drivers also had to deal with rainy and cold weather.
More than seven inches of rain fell during the month of May, washing out an entire day of qualifications.
But race day, May 26, was warm and sunny.
Everything heated up on the track with one of the most controversial races ever.
Paul Tracey was in second place during the 198th lap when he tried to pass first place driver Helio Castroneves.
