INDIANAPOLIS -- The spring of 2008 changed the sports landscape in the Hoosier state.
On April 1, Indiana University hired Tom Crean as their new men's basketball coach.
Seven weeks later on May 20, the NFL selected Indianapolis to host Super Bowl 46 in February 2012.
Then, on May 25, the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500.
Two-time 500 winner Helio Castroneves had a special spring in his step as he returned to the track, after winning 'Dancing with the Stars' in the off season.
On the track, his dancing partner, Julianne Hough, sang the national anthem.
The purse for the race increased to an estimated $2.5 million.
The first half of the race involved pole winner Scott Dixon and Dan Wheldon trading the lead.
Fast forward to lap 171 - Ryan Briscoe spun Danica Patrick's car, sending them both into the pit wall.
Both cars were eliminated. Tempers flared. Each driver was later fined for an aggressive pit incident.
With 24 laps to go, Dixon led the field and held on to win his first Indy 500.
Castroneves finished fourth.
