It's been one year to the day that James Hinchcliffe's life was on the line after a crash during practice for the Indianapolis 500. (Watch the original crash in the video player above)

It was the heaviest impact in a crash in recorded IndyCar history. A piece of shrapnel blew into the car and straight through his left thigh, clipping his artery along the way.

When he woke up from the crash, his third question was "When can I get back into a race car?"

He was told he wouldn't walk for several weeks, but he walked on the fourth day.

Hinchcliffe's recovery is in part attributed to the Holmatro safety crew at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and their fast response, but his will to get back in the car is what really pushed him to get back to 100 percent, and to race again in the Indy 500.
