Purdue Basketball Player Arrested, Reports Say

D.J. Byrd Faces Public Intoxication Charge

A starter on the Purdue basketball team was arrested in West Lafayette early Friday morning on a public intoxication charge.

Information about what led to the arrest of D.J. Byrd, 21, a junior guard, wasn't immediately released. Indiana State Police are handling the investigation.

Byrd has been a key cog in the Boilermakers' resurgence in recent weeks, averaging 12 points a game in Big Ten play, the second-leading Purdue scorer in conference action.

Byrd has been in double figures in five-straight games, which included wins over Northwestern and Illinois. He is hitting 50 percent of his three-pointers in conference play.

Byrd is from Crawfordsville. There was no immediate word from the team about his status.

At 17-9, the Boilermakers are on the bubble for inclusion in the NCAA Tournament. Purdue plays Michigan State on Sunday, a top 10 team that the Boilers were blown out by earlier this season.
