Sunny skies, a star-studded line-up and steamy temperatures topped the 500 Festival Parade on Saturday in downtown Indianapolis.The streets were packed with more than 300,000 people who werent deterred by the heat and humidity.Fan Areal Williams enjoyed the larger-than-life parade of popular cartoon characters that floated along the route."I love the 500 (Festival). I love parades. What I love about it is the dancers, the floats, the people, the senators, the governors. I love it, Williams said.Gov. Mitch Daniels rode a Harley-Davidson alongside the Patriot Guard and Purdue Universitys band was one of 13 bands that provided music.Fan Emily Roper said she came for the music, RTV6s Derrik Thomas reported.I like hearing the bands and seeing their different costumes, Roper said.
Organizers said it took nearly 1,500 volunteers to successfully pull off the event.
Superstar Olivia Newton-John served as the parades Grand Marshal."I'm very excited. I've been in a parade, but I've never been the marshal. This is great, Newton-John said.Then Indy 500 drivers were also on hand a day before the big race.Organizers said it took nearly 1,500 volunteers to successfully pull off the event.
