INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman who claimed a cab driver refused her service because of her weight has lost 81 pounds since June 14.
The Indiana Civil Rights Commission is pursuing an investigation against Indy Airport Taxi after Mararika Parker claimed that the driver refused to let her in his cab in February. City officials have also called for a hearing, Call 6's Rafael Sanchez reported.
Officials with Indy Airport Taxi told the commission that the company has never refused transportation to a client based upon any type of discrimination, and claimed that Parker was physically unable to enter the cab, even with assistance from the driver, Sanchez reported. After a Call 6 story ran in May concerning Parker's case, officials with the Indiana Health and Nutrition Center offered to help her lose weight for a year.
Parker, 28, first weighed in at the center at 667 pounds, Sanchez reported.Over the past four weeks, Parker has been meeting with the medical staff and her support group. She's on a strict Optifast liquid diet which also includes nutritional bars, she must keep a daily diary, and uses a pedometer to take at least 325 steps a day. She also does other exercises during the morning, midday and evening.Parker's doctor said she should be losing at least four pounds a week, Sanchez reported."She comes here once a week to see a behavior specialist and nutrition specialist. The program is so unique because we work on modifying behavior. We are not looking at a quick fix," Dr. Rashid Khairi said.
