Expected Cost Of Fixing Trinity Homes Rises

Company Believes It Will Pay More Than It Previously Thought

POSTED: 11:09 pm EDT September 21, 2004

The company that owns Trinity Homes says the cost of making repairs in connection with homeowners' mold complaints will be greater than it originally thought.

In its latest quarterly report to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Atlanta-based Beazer Homes says it believes repairs could cost up to $41,500 per home, Call 6's Rafael Sanchez reported Tuesday.

Previously, the company said it believed it would spend up to $37,000 per home.

Several Trinity homeowners are considering a proposed settlement to a class-action lawsuit they filed in August 2003. The lawsuit was filed after hundreds of homeowners filed complaints alleging that water seeped under some exterior brick veneers, causing extensive damage and mold.

If approved, the settlement would require Trinity to pay for the repairs and allow the law firm representing the owners to hire an independent engineering company to oversee the work, Sanchez reported.

Trinity also would guarantee all repairs for two years. If work extends beyond an agreed completion date, homeowners would receive $60 per day until it is done, according to the proposed settlement.

Homeowners must file any opposition to the plan by Monday. A hearing on the proposed settlement is scheduled for Oct. 18.

Beazer, which has denied any wrongdoing in the suit, has set aside millions of dollars to address the problems, officials said.
