INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis woman said Tuesday she's glad a taxi driver is being punished for denying her a ride because of her weight, but she might not be done pursuing the matter.
Mararika Parker weighed about 650 pounds in February, which is when she said taxi driver Abdullahi Egal refused to let her in his Indy Airport Taxi cab because of her size.
After holding an August hearing, the city in September suspended Egal's taxi license for six months."I'm just glad about the outcome because I think that's what he deserved," Parker told Call 6 for Help's Rafael Sanchez.Egal said in the hearing that he refused to drive Parker because he was worried about his safety and hers. He said he did nothing wrong."I was scared," Egal said. "I said, 'Maybe you need (a) special cab. I cannot take you.' "In its decision, the city said Egal didn't show why transporting Parker would be unsafe.Video captured by RTV6 in May shows that Parker was able to fit into a Ford Taurus taxicab, which was smaller than Egal's Ford Crown Victoria taxicab.Parker, who has lost about 110 pounds since she started a weight-loss program in June, said she was considering filing a civil lawsuit."Overweight, handicapped, blind, whatever: Just don't take it sitting down, because you don't have to," Parker said. "You've got to be treated just like everyone else."Egal will be able to seek a probationary taxi license in March, Sanchez reported.
