INDIANAPOLIS -- Tuesday, the state began the process of issuing the first licenses for home inspectors. They will be valid July 1.

The new rules have benefits to buyers and sellers, Call 6's Rafael Sanchez reported Tuesday.

Danny Maynard has been inspecting homes for 30 years. For the first time, Maynard and other home inspectors will need a license in three weeks to run his business.

Maynard said the new law is intrusive, but also gives home inspectors a way to prove themselves as qualified and trustworthy.

The new licensing system will mean a standard way of doing inspections statewide.

A checklist has been established that includes the basics that every inspection must cover, from the roof to the furnace.

The Home Inspectors Board, which met for its monthly meeting, reviewed license requests for the first time.

As of July 1, state regulators will be able to pull the licenses of people caught doing bad inspections.

The Real Estate Certification Program, which trains inspectors, expects the changes to benefit buyers and sellers.

"Most people are not experts in construction or mechanical components of the home, so they need professional guidance," said Tom Battle, of the Real Estate Certification Program.

It remains unclear how many people will actually seek a license. As of Tuesday, there have more than 30 applications. More are expected before July 1.
