Brides-To-Be Say Wedding Planner Jilted Them

POSTED: 2:39 am EDT June 24, 2006

Several local women say a wedding planner has suddenly stopped working on their events, leaving them scrambling to make plans of their own.

The women say James "Von" Belk agreed to plan their weddings but then dropped his work.

Angela Hancock said she paid Belk $4,500 to handle her October event. After she signed a contract, she said, she received nothing from him.

"He just fell off the face of the earth," Hancock told Call 6 for Help's Rafael Sanchez. "He was no longer returning phone calls or e-mails."

Robyn Smith, who is scheduled to get married next month, said she ordered a wedding dress through Belk. She has not received it.

"He took the money and ran," Smith said.

Call 6 tried unsuccessfully to contact Belk by phone and e-mail. One person told Call 6 that Belk might be sick and unable to respond, Sanchez reported.

The state chairwoman for the Association of Bridal Consultants said she is willing to work with Belk's customers if they need help.

Call 6's Sanchez invited anyone with complaints about Belk's business to send an e-mail to rafael_sanchez@6News.com. The subject line should read, "Wedding SOS."
