INDIANAPOLIS -- A motorcycle dealer came close to running out of temporary license tags for customers because of this month's computer upgrade at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Call 6 for Help's Rafael Sanchez reported Thursday. The tags are used by buyers of new motorcycles until they get a permanent plate. Max Richardson, of Dreyer Motorsports, told Call 6 that he had only five temporary tags left in his store on Thursday, and that he had tried for the past few weeks to get more from the BMV.

Call 6 contacted the BMV, which said that it had been unable to send new tags because their numbers had not been entered into a new computer system. The bureau started using the new system on July 5.Richardson said he was worried that if he ran out of tags, would-be customers might go somewhere else. Richardson could sell motorcycles without the tags, but the buyer could be pulled over and cited by police for riding without one."These are strictly for pleasure, so when (people) come in and they buy a motorcycle, they want to enjoy that right away, as quickly as possible," Richardson said. "They don't want to hear, 'You are going to have to wait until you get a temporary tag before you enjoy your new machine.' "The BMV said it resolved its tag situation Thursday morning. Richardson went to a license branch on Thursday and came away with 200 tags, Sanchez reported.BMV customers ran into problems at branches for days after the computer switch. Some services couldn't be performed, and others took a long time.On July 11, the BMV's commissioner said most of the glitches associated with the switch had been fixed. As of Thursday, people still couldn't use the BMV's self-service kiosks or telephone renewal services. Online renewal services were working.
