But Will I Find A Job? Career Outlook For Business And Technology Professions

Content Provided By Westwood College

Westwood College (ARA) - When choosing a college major, it's important to see what job prospects are available with the degree you hope to obtain. Earning a degree requires considerable time and financial commitment, and you'll want to be certain that your chances of landing a job when you graduate are as great as possible. Fields like information technology, marketing management and computer forensics offer good opportunities.

Information Technology

Workers with IT training are a vital part of today's computer-oriented world. Information technology involves a wide range of well-educated professionals, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the field is expected to experience faster-than-average growth during the 2008-2018 decade. Depending on your specialty (example: computer and information systems management) and whether you have earned an advanced degree, your job prospects can be affected as well. Job candidates who possess an MBA with an emphasis in information systems are often viewed more favorably.

Marketing Management

People in marketing management help advertising and promotion managers to raise awareness of the products and services of an organization. According to the BLS's Occupational Outlook Handbook, most job openings in this arena come when workers retire or leave the profession for other reasons. Some of the best job possibilities will go to creative college graduates with a marketing management degree, relevant experience and good communication skills.

Sheryl Swingley, a featured expert for the American Marketing Association Web site, advises soon-to-be marketing graduates to start their job search early, no matter the economic climate. Doing so can provide an idea of what types of positions may be available upon graduation, and help you see what skills might be required of job candidates while you still have time to acquire the necessary training.

Computer Forensics

Computer forensics is a fairly new, but expanding career field due to the increase in computer crimes, according to About.com. A computer forensics degree and any applicable real-world experience should do a great deal toward helping job seekers secure employment in this field. This type of investigative work is experiencing faster-than-average job growth, but the competition for jobs is still extensive. However, the Occupational Outlook Handbook says, "Opportunities are expected to be favorable for qualified computer forensic investigators."
