New Casinos Planned In Las Vegas, U.K.

Changes In British Laws Open Up Market

UPDATED: 9:59 a.m. EDT April 26, 2004

Looks like there may finally be something built on that empty piece of land next door to the Aladdin. A group of investors bought the 8.5-acre parcel of land at the Strip and Harmon Avenue earlier this month and plans to build a hotel and condominium complex on the site. It will have more than 300,000 square feet of entertainment, shopping and restaurant space at ground level. No word yet on when construction will begin or an expected opening date.

Construction on the newest Station casino is officially under way after a ground-breaking ceremony recently for Red Rock Station in the Summerlin area, northwest of the Strip. The $450 million project will feature 400 rooms, an 87,000-square-foot casino, restaurants, movie theaters and more, all wrapped up in a super-luxurious package intended to act as the flagship of the Station Casinos portfolio. The ground-breaking was viewed as an effort by Station to put a contentious time behind it. The licensing phase on the hotel brought out strong protests from future neighbors of the resort who objected to the size and scope. The new hotel is expected to open in early 2006.

MGM Mirage has announced its intention to build as many as four casino or entertainment complexes in the United Kingdom cities of Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, and Salford at an expected cost of more than $1.1 billion. The U.K. recently made significant legislative moves that are leading to a widespread expansion of legalized gambling, and several American companies are poised to leap into the new market.

This could have an impact on Vegas as the big gaming companies focus their attention and financial resources across the pond and delay new developments here in the States. Of course, the truly big question is will the new casinos in Great Britain have some sort of American city themes? I'm voting for a Boise, Ida., theme casino myself.

The Palms is already considered the "in" spot for the celebrity crowd and it's looking to cement that reputation with the announcement of a full-service recording studio in an upcoming expansion.

The studio will feature all the latest technical geegaws and whizbangs, none of which I will bore you with here since I don't really understand them myself. More importantly, unless you're planning to record the next hit single, who really cares? Except for big-name recording artists, of course. That's the crowd the Palms already lures, and the new studio will be yet another toy for the rich and powerful.

A few more choice details have leaked out about the upcoming Palazzo megaresort, the sister hotel to the Venetian scheduled to be built next door.

The new resort will feature more than 3,000 suites, a 100,000-square-foot casino, a massive underground parking garage, a theater, and another Grand Canal-style shopping mall. There is no formal timetable for the construction of the resort, but most expect it to open by 2006.
