Central Indiana Roads Waterlogged After Night Of Rain

A steady, heavy rain fell late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, causing streams to rise and standing water to collect in much of central Indiana.

Flood warnings were issued for many counties. As much as 3 inches of rain had fallen in the Indianapolis area.

Small creeks and streams were swollen and some were already out of their banks, particularly in areas to the west of Indianapolis. High water blocked Kessler Boulevard at Ditch Road in Marion County, forcing the road's closure.

People who live in the area said flooding is fairly common there.

"It's a bad situation across the board. It's hard for us to get in and out," said resident Julie Graves.

High water was also reported in a few spots on Southport Road and at Meridian and 56th streets.

Several vehicles got stuck at Belmont and Oliver avenues, on Indianapolis' southwest side. Several truck went through the water, which was up to the doors at about 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

Roads were also under water at Moller Road and 59th Street, between two apartment complexes.

Other street-flooding issues were reported at 79th Street and Fall Creek and in several spots in Hamilton County.

An Indianapolis Public Schools bus got stuck while trying to navigate flood waters in the 2300 block of North Webster Avenue. Students were taken off the bus and were transported to school.

Strong to severe thunderstorms went through parts of Indiana Wednesday evening but no significant severe weather was reported.

The rain ended Thursday morning and temperatures were much cooler than they have been in recent days.ighs are expected to be in the 40s over the next few days.
