INDIANAPOLIS -- A predicted winter storm did not materialize in central Indiana, but a light mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain did fall in much of the southern half of the state.

By noon Tuesday, less than an inch of snow had fallen in Indianapolis, but light freezing rain was falling, complicating the travel situation.

A little more snow and heavier freezing rain were reported in the Columbus area. South of that, road conditions were treacherous all the way to the state line.

The storm system tracked a little farther south than expected, walloping Kentucky with an icy mix of precipitation, but sparing much of Indiana the worst of the wintry blast.

To the north of Indianapolis, little if any snow fell overnight, and some light freezing drizzle was reported Tuesday afternoon.

Some more snow is forecast through Tuesday evening, with as much as 2 inches of accumulation possible.

A winter weather advisory remained in place for areas south of Indianapolis.

Road Conditions Rough In Parts Of State

Road conditions were worse as motorists drove south of Indianapolis.

Numerous crashes in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 in Johnson County caused the road to be blocked south of mile marker 100.

A motorist who was coming back to Indiana from Florida told 6News that conditions were far worse south of Columbus and downright dangerous in Kentucky.

A light slushy mix of snow and freezing rain coated other roads in central Indiana. Crews from the Department of Public Works and Indiana Department of Transportation worked throughout the night to keep the roads as clear as possible.

About 20 schools were either delayed or closed because of the weather.
