Severe thunderstorms belted storm-weary parts of Indiana with hail and damaging winds Monday afternoon and overnight.

Storms marched into Indiana from eastern Illinois, packing hail as large as golf balls and winds of up to 75 mph.

Numerous severe thunderstorm warnings were issued as the storms moved slowly from west to east.

Penny-sized hail was seen near downtown Indianapolis at about 4:30 p.m. The National Weather Service received similar hail reports from several other counties.

Storm spotters and law enforcement personnel reported minor wind damage in Hendricks, Hamilton and Vigo counties and winds of up to 75 mph were reported in several counties.

Flash flood warnings were also issued as the storms quickly dumped an inch or more of rain. As much as 3 inches fell in parts of the state, forecasters said.

Another round of storms rolled through at about midnight with more strong winds and small hail.

Power was knocked out to 25,000 Indianapolis Power and Light customers at the height of the storm. By 10 a.m. Tuesday, the number of power outages was down to 6,000. Duke Energy reported that 1,900 of its customers were without power as of 6 a.m.

Highs are expected to cool into the 80s on Tuesday under sunny skies. Showers and thunderstorms return to the forecast mid-week.
