Bone-Chilling Indiana Temps Lowest In Years

State Prepares For Extreme Cold

Temperatures dipped well below zero Thursday morning and an even colder morning is expected Friday as bone-chilling conditions settle in across Indiana.

It hit minus 6 in Indianapolis Thursday, a little colder than was originally expected. Storm Team 6 meteorologist Paul Poteet said Friday morning's temperature could be the lowest since January 2000 if it hits minus 10, as forecast.

The temperature was minus 10 at 9 a.m. Thursday in Lafayette. At the same time, temperatures were also well below zero in other central Indiana cities, with minus 8 reported in Kokomo and minus 5 in Bloomington.

More than 275 school systems delayed or canceled classes Thursday. Those with a two-hour delay found temperatures had actually gone down more by the time students boarded buses to head to school.

The arctic blast comes after a storm system dumped up to 4 inches of snow on central Indiana Wednesday.

By Wednesday night, temperatures began to plummet as northwesterly winds buffeted the region, dropping wind chills to 20 to 30 below zero. A wind chill warning remains in effect through early Friday afternoon.

The high temperature may not get above zero on Thursday, and it doesn't look much better on Friday, with a forecast high of 7 in Indianapolis.

Anyone exposed to the elements for more than just a few minutes could get frostbite, which could lead to hypothermia if precautions aren't taken.

In February 2007, Indianapolis' low hit 6 below zero during a cold snap that came after a big snowfall.

The city's record low of 27 below, which happened in January 1994, doesn't appear to be in jeopardy.
