INDIANAPOLIS -- A winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow on Indianapolis, marking the city's biggest snowfall in 13 years, and buried parts of central Indiana in as much as 13 inches of the white stuff.

Indianapolis International Airport recorded 12.5 inches of snow during the winter storm, the largest storm total since 1996, the National Weather Service said. The storm total was tied for the sixth highest since record keeping began.

Far flung communities northeast and southwest of Indianapolis recorded the highest amounts. In Bloomington, 12.8 inches of snow was recorded. The same amount fell in Muncie.

As of 9 a.m., the storm system responsible for the wintry mess was pulling away, ending the snow gradually from west to east and leaving Hoosiers to start digging out.

Most school systems canceled classes for the day. As of 9 a.m., more than 525 closings and delays were reported to 6News.

The snow was far more than expected in many communities north of Indianapolis. About 5 inches of snow was reported in Lafayette. Ten inches was reported in Greenwood and 12.1 inches fell in Brownsburg.

Farther south, more sleet and freezing rain mixed with the snow, suppressing snow totals a bit in some areas, but accumulation totals were still impressive.

6News' Dan Spehler said that he couldn't get out of his home on Indianapolis' northeast side, but that his neighbors were doing their best to find a way out with shovels and snow blowers.

On the south side, roads were passable at Southport Road and Interstate 65, but traffic was moving very slowly, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

"It's been non-stop for a while," said Tim O'Meara, who had been clearing snow at a shopping center parking lot at Southport Road and Interstate 65.

Indiana State Police said troopers have worked 170 crashes and slideoffs since the second wave of snow began on Tuesday afternoon. No injuries were reported in any of the crashes.

The National Weather Service said 10.9 inches of snow fell at the airport in January 1999, with an 11.8-inch snowfall in March of 1996 and 12.8 inches in January 1996.

The Great Blizzard of 1978 dumped 15.5 inches of snow at the airport. The city's record one-storm snowfall of 16.1 inches happened in February 1910.

The snow ended during the late morning hours, leaving behind mostly cloudy skies and highs in the low 20s.
