Baseball-sized hail fell in the Fishers area Tuesday evening, causing property damage in the Hamilton County community as a couple of rounds of thunderstorms swept through central and southern parts of the state.

The worst of the hail fell along the 116th Street corridor, where windows of some homes and cars were damaged.

The hail pelted Fishers at about 5:30 p.m. as a severe thunderstorm intensified when it moved in from the west, prompting severe thunderstorm warnings in much of the Indianapolis metro area.

Large hail was reported in several other parts of central Indiana, including Parke, Henry, Putnam, Marion, Hendricks and Jennings counties.

Hail smashed through vehicle windshields at a Flying J along Interstate 70 near New Castle. It also left dents and dings in RVs that were parked in the lot there.

Golf ball-sized hail struck the rear window of Steve Seidl's vehicle.

"It's completely shattered," he said. "I was … pulling into the gas station trying to get some cover and the whole window basically fell out."

A prolonged period of nickel-sized hail fell in parts of Hendricks County, coating the ground, as the storm that eventually hit Fishers strengthened.

There were scattered reports of wind damage, too. Winds gusted to at least 60 mph in the same storm that hit Fishers and in northern Marion County, downing some trees in the Castleton area.

A warm, soupy air mass allowed storms to gain strength quickly shortly after they formed Tuesday afternoon.

A severe thunderstorm watch that was issued through much of the afternoon and evening was canceled as the storms began weakening and moving out of the area.

Indiana's weather should get a little more tranquil in the coming days, with showers and much cooler temperatures moving in for Wednesday.
